Whether your car is brand new or has been on the road for years, it’s always to make a habit of performing routine maintenance before any problems arise. Are you making any of these common car maintenance mistakes? If so, changing your habits could save you a lot of money down the road.
Most drivers know they should regularly change their car’s oil, but many drivers never think about the importance of changing their car’s air filter. Doing once or twice a year is an inexpensive way to keep your car in good shape.
For a lot of drivers, if a tire isn’t flat, it’s fine. But driving with improperly inflated tires can also cause a number of issues, such as uneven tire wear and reduced fuel economy and overall performance.
Your car relies on several crucial fluids for optimal performance. You should regularly check on and replace coolant, brake fluid, and transmission fluid to keep your car’s engine in good shape.
Finally, it’s best not to ignore any dashboard warning lights that illuminate in your car. Often, these lights signal the beginning of a problem that is easy to fix right away, but difficult and costly if addressed later on.

Tires are perhaps the most essential part of any vehicle, but you would be amazed by how many folks come into our service center at Midwest Superstore with an absolutely abused set of wheels. Many drivers need new tires but have no idea. Here, we’ll help you to check the road-worthiness of your current set of tires.
The Penny Test
This is an easy trick, and all you need is a penny to get it done. Stick a penny head-first into the tread of one of your tires. If you cannot see most of the top of Lincoln’s head, your tread is deep enough and your tires are good-to-go. But, if you can see most of Honest Abe’s dashing haircut, you probably need new tires because this set is worn. Repeat this test with each tire.
The Wear Bar
All modern tires are built with something called a “wear bar.” This is a horizontal ridge that runs underneath your tread. When the tread becomes too worn down, the wear bar starts to show. If you can see the wear bar on any of your tires, they should be changed promptly.
Not sure if you need new tires? Stop in at Midwest Superstore and ask one of our experienced service technicians; they’re always happy to help!

As a parent, sending a child off to college can be both exciting and challenging. While it will come with some added financial burden, making sure your college-bound kid is equipped with a good car can have many benefits. Here are some things to consider when car shopping for your college student:
When you account for tuition, meals, books, and housing, the costs of college can quickly add up. That’s why it’s important to shop smart when picking out a car for your college student. We highly recommend finding a car that won’t add too much to the already high cost of sending your child to college.
Luckily, buying a certified pre-owned car combines many of the perks of a brand new car with the more affordable price of a used vehicle. When you shop certified pre-owned, you can rest assured that your child is behind the wheel of a good, safe car without the burden of high monthly payments.
Needs vs. Wants
When shopping for a college student, it’s important to consider what your driver really needs from a car. While they might love the idea of a big SUV or pickup, smaller cars are easier to handle, make parking easier, and generally get better gas mileage than larger cars.
Our lot is filled with a diverse range of incredible vehicles; discover which one is right for your college-bound kid when you visit Midwest Superstore.
Now that spring is finally here, you probably feel like freshening up your house. But, you don’t want to forget about your car. With just a little bit of time, you can make your car look and feel like new again. Read these tips on how to spring clean your car.
- Clean your vents. It can be hard to reach all the dust inside your air vents. Use a foam craft brush to get in between all the slats. You can even blast the vents with some compressed air to knock the dust loose.
- Shine your headlights. Over time, plastic headlight covers can get cloudy. Cover them in toothpaste, let it sit for a few minutes, and then wipe it away to reveal clear, bright headlights again.
- Wash your floor mats. Winter can leave your floor mats looking rough. Spray them down with a cleaning solution and either throw them in your washer or hose them down with a power washer to get out most of the grime.
- Clean the crevices. All the folded lines and crevices in your car are perfect places for dirt to settle. Use an old toothbrush to scrub away the muck. You can even wrap a cloth around the end of a flathead screwdriver to scrape away tough layers.
To make sure your car not only looks good for spring but runs as well as it should, schedule a maintenance appointment with our service department here at Midwest Superstore.

Vehicle Identification Number
The VIN can usually be found on the vehicle’s dashboard in front of the driver’s seat. This number can be used to run a vehicle history report, which will tell you all about the vehicle, including its accident history.
A Smooth Ride
Test driving a used vehicle will help you determine the vehicle’s driving condition. Use all of your senses; listen for any noises, watch for any smells, and feel to see whether the ride is smooth.
An Undamaged Interior
Look carefully at the interior of a used car to make sure you’re aware of its condition before signing on the dotted line.
An Undamaged Exterior
Perform the same careful examination of the vehicle’s exterior, looking closely for any dents, scratches, or rust spots that might cause you problems later on.
The Features You Want
Before you start shopping for a used car, you need to decide what types of features you want. Whether you prioritize safety, connectivity, capability, or all three, knowing what you need helps us help you find the perfect fit.

We’re all hopeful that spring is on its way as we head into March, but that doesn’t mean you should get too relaxed about your emergency kit. There are a lot of things you should keep in your car no matter what time of year it is, so we’ve put together a list of some winter and early spring essentials.
No matter what time of year it is, you should always have essentials like non-perishable, dry foods that won’t go bad in heat or cold, bottled water, blankets, and a change of clothes in case you get caught in the rain or snow. A water filter is also a smart choice if you’re going camping in case you struggle to find clean water.
Make sure you have a few necessary electronics, too, like a spare cell phone that’s fully charged and a flashlight. A spare tire is important, and you’ll also want something that helps you dig yourself out of snow and mud such as cat litter or salt. And don’t forget cash and coins! You may need to use a pay phone or go somewhere that doesn’t take cards, so keep some spare change on hand.
If you’re on the hunt for a new vehicle to start off your spring, give us a call or stop by Midwest Superstore.
