When the ideal vacation is one packed with
museums, arts, and gardens, Wichita makes a great destination. This city is
home to 33 museums, including Old Cowtown Museum, Exploration Place, and the
Wichita Art Museum. The Botanica botanical garden is located on the Arkansas
River and offers a breathtaking display of plants and butterflies.
Rocks National Natural Landmark
This national landmark may require a little
detour, but it’s worth a vacation day for anyone interested in geology and
fossils. The site includes gorgeous spires, pinnacles, and buttes, plus many
fossils from Cretaceous marine animals.
Lawrence is located on the eastern end of
Kansas and is packed with culture and history. With frequent live music, live
theatre at the Black Box Theater, and lots of pleasant outdoor spaces, this
college town is a great place to spend a weekend.
Bottoms Wildlife Area
The Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area is a great
vacation destination for birdwatchers. This 41,000-acre natural land sink is

One of the most tried-and-true things to do with your family is heading to the zoo, and the Hutchinson Zoo has plenty of fun activities and animals to see. You and your crew can hitch a ride on the train, check out the Prairie Dog Complex, marvel at the Lagoon Overlook, and visit with feathered creatures in the Wildlife Aviary.
Yoder Amish Community
An established community for over 125 years and with 100 Amish families, Yoder offers tourists the sight of horse and buggies and historical homes, as well as handmade goods and locally-grown, fresh food.
Dillon Nature Center
Get outside and in the midst of beautiful landscapes at the Dillon Nature Center. It features three miles of trails, a fishing pond, and a children’s play area, in addition to over 300 species of plants and 200 species of birds.
Want to get out of the house but stay out of the sweltering, hot weather? Strataca gives you and your family the unique experience of heading 650 feet underground to a salt mine beneath Kansas. A guided tour leads visitors through chambers and lets you collect your own piece of salt from the mine. Plus, the Underground Vaults & Storage chamber is used to securely keep many objects including movie props and costumes!
